Dantrium IV (Dantrolene Sodium)
- Medicine Name: DANTRIUM
- Generic Name: Dantrolene Sodium
- Dosage Form & Strength: Injection – 20 mg (60 mL vial)
- Manufactured By: Par Pharmaceutical
DANTRIUM (Dantrolene Sodium) is a skeletal muscle relaxant primarily used for:
- The emergency treatment of malignant hyperthermia, a rare but life-threatening reaction to certain anesthesia drugs.
- Preventive treatment in patients who are at high risk of developing malignant hyperthermia during surgery.
Dantrolene works by interfering with calcium release from the sarcoplasmic reticulum in muscle cells, helping to relax the muscles.
Liver function tests (such as SGOT, SGPT) should be performed periodically during treatment.
Take precautions to prevent extravasation during IV administration, as the high pH may cause tissue damage.
Use cautiously in patients with a history of liver dysfunction or pleural effusion.
Dantrolene may increase sensitivity to sunlight; patients should avoid prolonged sun exposure.
Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless specifically advised by a healthcare provider.
