Cytalux (pofalacianine) is an FDA-approved optical imaging agent used as an adjunct during surgery for:
- Identifying malignant lesions in adults with ovarian cancer
- Detecting malignant and non-malignant pulmonary lesions in adults with known or suspected lung cancer
Recommended Dosage:
- For Ovarian Cancer: 0.025 mg/kg IV infusion over 60 minutes in 250 mL of 5% dextrose, administered 1 to 9 hours before surger
- For Lung Cancer: Same dose and infusion procedure, given 1 to 24 hours before surgery
Important Notes:
- Discontinue folate, folic acid, or supplements 48 hours before use
- Confirm negative pregnancy status before administration
- Consider antihistamines and antiemetics as premedication
Infusion Reactions: Reactions like nausea, vomiting, hypersensitivity, and flushing may occur. Treat with antihistamines or anti-nausea meds as clinically required.
Pregnancy Warning: May cause fetal harm. Use contraception and verify pregnancy status prior to initiation.
Breastfeeding: Effects on infants are unknown. Weigh risks versus benefits before continuing treatment.
False Results Risk: Fluorescence imaging may show false negatives/positives. Non-fluorescing tissue doesn’t rule out cancer.
Dilution Precaution: Only use 5% dextrose to prepare infusion. Other diluents may cause aggregation and increased risk of infusion-related adverse reactions.
