VISTIDE (Cidofovir) is an antiviral medication used for the treatment of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). It is not intended for other viral infections.

Recommended Dosage:

  • Induction Phase: 5 mg/kg via intravenous infusion over 1 hour, once a week for two consecutive weeks

  • Maintenance Phase: Starting two weeks after induction, 5 mg/kg IV infusion every two weeks

Vistide must be co-administered with probenecid and intravenous hydration to minimize kidney toxicity.

  • Nephrotoxicity: Serious risk of kidney damage. Monitor renal function closely and ensure hydration and use of probenecid.

  • Contraindicated in Renal Impairment: Do not use in patients with pre-existing renal dysfunction.

  • Hematologic Toxicity: Monitor complete blood counts regularly for neutropenia and anemia.

  • Ocular Effects: May reduce intraocular pressure; monitor for ocular hypotony.

  • Metabolic Acidosis: Monitor bicarbonate and metabolic parameters.

  • Eye Inflammation: Risk of uveitis and iritis—monitor for symptoms.

  • Pregnancy Risk (Category C): May harm the fetus. Avoid use during pregnancy.

  • Breastfeeding: Not recommended due to potential risk to infants.
