ENTEREG (Alvimopan) is a peripherally acting μ-opioid receptor antagonist indicated for:

  • Accelerating the time to upper and lower gastrointestinal (GI) recovery following surgeries involving partial bowel resection with primary anastomosis.


It works by blocking opioid receptors in the GI tract without affecting central nervous system opioid activity, making it useful for preventing postoperative ileus in select patients.

  • Restricted Use Program: Due to increased risk of myocardial infarction with long-term use, Entereg is only approved for short-term use (maximum of 15 doses) and under a Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) program.

  • Not for Opioid-Tolerant Patients: Do not use in patients who have received therapeutic doses of opioids for more than 7 consecutive days immediately prior to surgery.

  • Monitor for Adverse Effects: Watch for signs of hypersensitivity, abdominal pain, and allergic reactions.

  • Pregnancy Risk: Use with caution during pregnancy and lactation as safety data is limited.
