EPIDIOLEX is a prescription cannabidiol-based antiepileptic drug used to treat seizures associated with:
- Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome (LGS)
- Dravet Syndrome
- Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC)
Approved for use in patients aged 12 months and older.
Recommended Dosage:
- Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome & Dravet Syndrome:
Start at 2.5 mg/kg twice daily (5 mg/kg/day).
After one week, increase to 5 mg/kg twice daily (10 mg/kg/day).
May increase up to 10 mg/kg twice daily (20 mg/kg/day) based on response. - Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC):
Start at 2.5 mg/kg twice daily (5 mg/kg/day).
Titrate weekly by 2.5 mg/kg twice daily, up to 12.5 mg/kg twice daily (25 mg/kg/day).
Faster titration may be considered but no more frequently than every other day.
Important: Liver function tests (ALT, AST, and bilirubin) must be performed before initiating treatment. Adjust dose for patients with moderate or severe hepatic impairment.
Hypersensitivity Reactions: Contraindicated in patients with known allergies to cannabidiol or formulation ingredients.
Liver Enzyme Elevation: Cannabidiol may increase ALT/AST levels. Monitor liver function regularly.
CNS Effects: May cause drowsiness and sedation. Patients should avoid driving or operating machinery until they understand how Epidiolex affects them.
Suicidal Thoughts: All antiepileptic drugs carry a risk of suicidal ideation. Patients should be monitored for behavioral or mood changes.
Withdrawal Caution: Taper dose gradually unless serious adverse reactions warrant rapid discontinuation.
Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Safety has not been established. Discuss risks and benefits with a physician.
