Leqvio is a SIRNA-based cholesterol-lowering medication used for adults with:
- Primary hypercholesterolemia (including heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia)
- Mixed dyslipidemia with inadequate response to statins
- Statin intolerance where alternative therapies are required
Leqvio works by inhibiting PCSK9 production, helping the liver remove more LDL-C (“bad cholesterol”) from the blood.
Recommended Dosage:
- 284 mg administered via subcutaneous injection
- Initial dose, then again at 3 months, and subsequently every 6 months
- Inject in upper arm, abdomen, or thigh
- Continue cholesterol-lowering diet and statin therapy as advised
If a dose is missed:
- Administer immediately if within 3 months of the scheduled date
- If delayed >3 months, restart: dose now, at 3 months, then every 6 months
Dialysis Consideration: Avoid hemodialysis within 72 hours of dosing
Pregnancy: Use with caution; limited data available. Avoid during pregnancy
Breastfeeding: Not recommended due to potential drug presence in breast milk
Injection Site: Avoid inflamed or damaged skin when administering
Leqvio has no known effect on the ability to drive or operate machinery.
