VENTAVIS® (Iloprost) is a synthetic analog of prostacyclin indicated for the treatment of adult patients with severe pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) (WHO Group I). This condition involves high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs, and VENTAVIS works by dilating blood vessels to improve blood flow and relieve PAH symptoms.
Therapeutic Benefits:
- Helps improve exercise capacity
- Reduces symptoms related to PAH
- Administered via inhalation for targeted pulmonary effect
Recommended Dosage:
- Start with 2.5 mcg per inhalation, and increase to 5 mcg if tolerated
- Use 6 to 9 times daily, with at least 2-hour intervals between doses
- Maximum daily dose: 45 mcg
- 20 mcg/mL concentration is preferred for patients requiring reduced inhalation times
Note: Not studied in pediatric populations (under 18 years of age).
Avoid skin or eye contact and oral ingestion of the inhalation solution
Do not initiate therapy in patients with systolic blood pressure <85 mmHg
Risk of syncope may increase with exertion
Pulmonary edema could indicate pulmonary venous hypertension — discontinue if signs occur
Bronchospasm risk: Especially in patients with asthma, COPD, or hyperreactive airways
Iloprost use in acute pulmonary infections has not been evaluated
